IBNR.net is a reserving platform specifically designed for estimating incurred but not reported (IBNR) reserves. The platform is developed from real-world professional experience and reflects actuarial methods and workflows actively used in the industry.
The main functions of IBNR.net are to streamline workflows, allow for better documentation, and automate repetitive tasks. The platform’s aim is not to reinvent established methodologies for setting reserves, as altering these could have significant regulatory and financial consequences for users’ businesses.
IBNR.net launched in March 2026 and is designed to offer as much flexibility in assumption setting as possible. The platform aims to align its estimates as closely as possible with those of its users, especially as the platform matures and more tools are added. We recognize that each organization has unique nuances in assumptions and methodologies, and we welcome collaboration to enhance the platform’s usefulness. Suggestions or feedback can be sent to support@ibnr.net.
IBNR.net provides end-to-end support for the health reserving process, from raw data ingestion to final reserve estimates and reporting.
Industry-Standard Methods#
IBNR.net utilizes the loss development method, the industry standard for estimating health IBNR reserves.
Below are the core features available on the platform:
- Triangle adjustments: Make adjustments directly to the triangle to address outliers and anomalies in the data. If source data is uploaded, full traceability back to the underlying records is maintained directly from the triangle.
- Age-to-age methods: Select from multiple average methods for loss development factors, including simple average, medial average, geometric average, and harmonic average.
- Bornhuetter-Ferguson method: Blend PMPMs from the projection method for recent incurred periods where development data is limited, producing more reliable estimates.
- Seasonality: Upload seasonality factors, select from pre-built options, or review the platform’s data-driven factors (calculated using the ratio-to-annual-average method) when using the projection method.
- Margin: Apply margin to reserve estimates once calculated, allowing actuaries to incorporate a level of conservatism appropriate for the risk profile.
The technical assignment of setting reserves is only part of the process. Communicating results to stakeholders is equally critical for sound actuarial practice and business decision-making. IBNR.net streamlines this communication by allowing users to automatically generate comprehensive reports that clearly outline methodology, assumptions, and results. The platform can also create ready-to-send emails that summarize key findings, as well as detailed notes that can be attached to specific calculations or datasets for internal documentation purposes.
Streamlined Reserve Setting#
In practice, a significant portion of the reserving process is spent on data preparation, which includes cleaning, reconciling, and validating data before any analysis can begin. IBNR.net streamlines this workflow by handling data ingestion and transformation automatically.
Because all work is performed within a single purpose-built application, there is no need to manage multiple spreadsheets or worry about formula errors and inconsistencies. Simply upload triangle data, or even easier, a columnar data file, and the platform will handle the rest.
Documentation and accountability are essential in a collaborative environment, particularly when multiple team members contribute to the same analysis. All changes to triangles are logged and clearly visible within the application, providing full traceability and accountability across your team.
IBNR.net is designed to support actuarial expertise, not replace it. The reserving process still requires professional judgment and oversight. By offering tailored exhibits, clear guidance, and intuitive instructions, including resources for less experienced analysts, IBNR.net empowers actuaries to focus on making informed, high-impact business decisions, rather than get bogged down in tedious manual tasks.
Data Privacy and Security#
Healthcare data privacy is critical, and we understand the hesitation in uploading data to a third-party platform. In most cases, setting healthcare reserves does not require the use of protected health information (PHI). Aggregate claims data is sufficient.
Columnar data may be useful when using the outlier detection tool, which allows users to select a triangle cell and trace back to the source data. However, even in this case, it is recommended that PHI columns be removed before uploading, as these fields are typically not necessary for removing outliers from lag triangles.
IBNR.net is designed to be secure and HIPAA-compliant. See the Data Privacy Policy for more details on how your data, AI models, and authentication are handled. If you are a HIPAA Covered Entity or Business Associate and believe your use of the platform requires a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), please contact us at support@ibnr.net before uploading any PHI.
We recognize that utilizing a third-party platform involves certain risks, including the potential for data loss should IBNR.net discontinue operations. To mitigate this, the platform enables users to download all calculations, reports, and assumptions for secure, long-term storage outside of IBNR.net.
See the Getting Started guide for more details on how to upload data and begin an analysis.
